DBHIDS Immigrant Affairs and Language Access Services

Immigrant Affairs and Language Access Services assists in the development of agency-wide policies and strength-based approaches that engage and provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services for refugee and immigrant communities with behavioral health concerns.

The DBHIDS Language Access Policy provides protocols for staff when providing services to individuals who have limited English proficiency (LEP).  It is the City’s policy to grant access to services or programs to every person even when there is a limited ability to speak, understand, read or write English.

HIAS Pennsylvania

HIAS Pennsylvania provides social and legal services to low-income immigrants (including humanitarian visas, family visas, getting a green card, and applying for citizenship).  Currently, providing all of their regular services, but for the most part, working with clients remotely. Let’s Talk Philly is an organization made of immigrants and refugees from diverse countries and cultures, working together to improve community wellness and overcome barriers to social and economic integration by building language and leadership skills. Conversation Circles was created for immigrants to become more comfortable with speaking English. By encouraging their participants to practice their English in a fun, comfortable, peer-to-peer environment, they foster an environment for sharing cultural understanding and appreciation.

Mural Arts Program – Porch Light Program; Southeast by Southeast

Through public art and a vibrant neighborhood hub, Southeast by Southeast creates a welcoming, supportive community space for immigrant and refugee families. Volunteers, neighbors, and artists teach classes on a range of subjects, stretching from sewing and weaving to English as a Second Language.  We provide healing educational, arts, and wellness programs for immigrant and refugee families.  Programs are online or outdoors at the moment due to COVID.
