2020 ADA Summit: Honoring 30 Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Looking Towards the Future

This summit will look backward at the development of disability rights in the 30 years since the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed; and forward to the creation of a truly inclusive society in which each person is valued for the contributions they make to that society, and provided access to tools to maximize those contributions.

This summit will look backward at the development of disability rights in the 30 years since the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed; and forward to the creation of a truly inclusive society in which each person is valued for the contributions they make to that society, and provided access to tools to maximize those contributions. In the 30 years that the ADA has been in existence, we have increased our awareness of, sensitivity to, and appreciation of the struggles and achievements of each and every member of our community, regardless of their intellectual or physical capacities. This summit will seek to ask (and answer) questions like:
How well have we actually done to achieve equality?
Has access to opportunity resulted in tangible improvements in the quality of life for our differently abled citizens?
Do we treat differently abled as co-equal partners or do we patronize?
Do we create spaces in different environments (education, public transit, housing, and entertainment/public accommodations) that are welcoming and accessible for all?
How well do we hear the voices of those who cannot articulate their own needs, desires, and ideas; or those whose form of articulation is not readily understood by society at large?
What new products and consumer goods are available for people with disabilities?
What elements of the ADA’s reforms have been the most effective at achieving the goals of equality, access, and acceptance?
What new legislative initiatives are needed to build on the ADA?
